Hey, Look, Carly Fiorina's Coming to Town! Let's Go Advance an Event For Her!

Even as we wait to see if (or perhaps when) Super-PACs blow up their fictional "independence" by doing exactly what their masters need in the way of insanely vicious negative ads, turns out Carly Fiorina's operation is showing the absurdity of the "independence" claim on a more prosaic level. As Emma Roller reports at National Journal, CARLY for America is handling the basic advance work you'd have in the past assumed an official campaign would take care of.

But just as the name of the Super-PAC (Carly, it seems, does not stand for the candidate's first name, but rather for Conservative, Authentic, Responsible Leadership for You and for America) represents a dumb evasion of "independence," so, too is its work, which everyone involved seems to be pretending is kind of an accident.

[Sarah Isgur] Flores [Fiorina's deputy campaign manager], who used to work for CARLY for America before joining Fiorina's campaign, said the campaign tries to advance as many events as it can, but added that the support they observe from CARLY for America staffers is "fantastic."
"It depends on the event, but yes, we have staff that normally goes to things ahead of time," Flores said. "We'll continue doing our thing, but are thrilled they're doing theirs."

Yeah, I bet they are, because if they didn't Fiorina events would be rolling balls of madness with few spectators.

What this all shows is the extremely low threshold campaigns apparently need to meet to stay street-legal when they are blatantly violating the rules against campaign and Super-PAC coordination. I mean, I guess if Fiorina paused in her pithy remarks at some event to say, Haha FEC, come and get me, I've breaking the law bwahahaha, there might be a problem, but it also might just enhance her reputation as an outsider maverick.

Yeah, we need an entirely new campaign finance system, which will probably require a constitutional amendment, or at some point soon Super-PAC funders will just impatiently push the "candidates" aside and run for president their own selves.
